Because of mathematics has relation in all of knowledge of human being, so mathematics is not neutral or free of value. Then, mathematics need social foundation to develop mathematics itself.
Mathematics can be divided into formal and informal, pure and applied mathematics.
a. Formal-Pure mathematics is mathematics for student at school and university.
b. Formal-Applied mathematics is mathematics that is developing in education or not, for example, in industry someone needs statistics.
c. Informal-Pure mathematics is mathematics that close with culture of pure mathematics.
d. Formal-Applied mathematics, that apply in many sectors. For example in crafts, marketing, etc.
Dowling on Ernest (1991: 93), mathematics is divide into 4 dimensions: Production (creativity), Recontextualization (point of view of the teacher and basic of education), Reproduction (activities in class) and Operationalization (application of mathematics). The second dimension of developing mathematics contain of 4 aspects. There are Academic (University), School, Work and Popular (consumer and public).
